“Learning Under the Stars” promotes nature-based and experiential learning for students of the ILB (Integrative Learning Workshop Brigittenau).

Our aim is to reconnect children with the local flora and fauna and provide them with fundamental experiences in nature. Through hands-on, process-oriented projects, students learn to take responsibility and develop their social skills.

    WHERE WE WERE

    WHERE WE ARE NOW

    • A playable structure: An interactive chair system based on conflict and consequence
    • Based on the story of Zahhak
    • Focus on transformation through choices
    • The ending of the story changes through choices

    ____________________________________________

    THE GAME

    • The game explores the story through interactions.
    • There are 4 characters divided into 2 teams:

Team 1: Zahhak (The king) Ahriman (The Devil)

Team 2 : Kaveh (The blacksmith) Fereydun (The Defeater)

    ____________________________________________

    CORE MECHANICS

    • Two teams build separate structures with pieces and joints
    • Teams take turns
    • Players can Add/ Remove/ Modify pieces
    • Constant tension/ Decision making:

Build your structure or Weaken the opponent

    • The chairs cannot function simultaneously, the team who completes and stabilizes their chair first, wins

    ____________________________________________

    CHARACTER ABILITIES

    • Zahhak (The king): Can add 1 piece OR take 2 pieces
    • Ahriman (The devil): Can add 1 piece OR block a connection point
    • Kaveh (The blacksmith): Can take one piece OR add 1 piece + repair a taken piece
    • Fereydun (The defeater): Can take 1 piece OR lock 1 pieces

    ____________________________________________

    PIECES AND JOINTS

    • Each team receives its own set of structural pieces and connectors / joints
    • Cow horn joints: one shared element between both teams
    • They are necessary to complete the structure
    • Creating direct conflict over completion

    ____________________________________________

    TRY OUTS

    ____________________________________________

    NEXT STEPS

    • Play testing the game + improvement
    • contacting the experimental game culture department
    • Working on the design of the chair
    • Making prototypes

    Next steps

    Model development
    Reed roof? -> Material dependent
    2 models = 2 options
    focus on overall structure
next week 2 models ready + meeting at metal workshop

    Location
    Possibility -> Donau Insel Imkerverrein
Other possibilities -> Wild Bee association Wien, Wolfganggasse, Biodiversity corridors Wien, Uni Wien Cooperation

    1. Inspiration

∙ Performance, material, and reading as starting points
∙ The chair as an object of exploration and interaction
∙ Speculative redesign of everyday objects through bio-based processes

    2. Waste & Material

∙ Objects as part of a natural waste and growth cycle

∙ Grown from natural materials → decomposing back into soil

∙ Use of raw, minimally processed materials

∙ Co-creation with materials: the unpredictability of growth as a stylistic and design device

    3. Labor & Production

∙ Artisanal objects serve a small elite; industrial production offers wider availability but exploits workers

∙ Question: how can production be both accessible and non-exploitative?

∙ Growing as an alternative production model beyond human labor

    4. Availability & Access

∙ Community hubs and trading stations as a distribution model

∙ Question: do objects need longevity if they can be produced without labor?

∙ Decentralised, collective infrastructure for production and distribution

    5. Form & Sitting

∙ Material exploration: growing material into molds

∙ Testing molds made from different materials

∙ Reusing and integrating every part of the process

    ∙ More-than-human sitting → interspecies resting

    6. Process & Visibility

∙ Making the process visible: showing and using every object involved

∙ The molds themselves as part of the project narrative

∙ Circular thinking: no object remains invisible or is discarded
